Golf tips from the Pro
Golf Tips from the Pro is a series that features tips from our professional golf coaches. In this November edition, Director of Junior Academy Simon Lloyd, a member of British PGA, shares with us some tips to make “solid contact”.
How to produce a solid contact
Simon Lloyd has been coaching at Keppel Club since January 2023. Simon’s coaching philosophy is to keep things simple and clear. He believes in helping students to improve through gamification and productive practice. While Simon specialises in junior golf, his advice on how to produce a solid contact is useful and relevant to adult golfers.
What is solid contact?
Solid contact in golf refers to striking the ball before the turf, specifically from the middle of the club face, with the correct angle of attack and dynamic loft at the point of impact
Most golfers strike the ball with too much dynamic loft and some even believe that they should strike the turf slightly before the ball. This causes weak shots that have no penetration and lose a lot of distance.
You may practise creating the impact position by following the illustrations as shown below.
Drills
- Using a wedge or short iron
- Practise hitting shots making just a half swing with a short follow through like Tommy Fleetwood
- Imagine trying to hit a ball under a goal post about 10 to 20 metres away
- Work on the correct impact position and make sure that the low point of your swing is past the ball
This should help you to understand and feel solid contact. You will hit the ball initially lower, more penetrating and much further than ever before.
