Golf tips from the Pro
Golf Tips from the Pro is a series that features tips from our professional golf coaches.
Chris Holloway, a US PGA pro of 20 years, noted that whenever he had a good game, he always had putted well. Today, he shares some useful tips on how to practise putting.
Golf is a difficult game and putting is not easy. Whenever I played well, I have always putted well. Controlling the speed and distance
makes the ball roll, and holing the putt gives you confidence.
Here’s a great drill for you to do before tee-off. It only takes five minutes and it will help you develop a feel for the green speeds
that day. Plus, it will give you confidence on your short putts.
- Take four balls to the practice putting green and place them 10 paces (25 feet or about seven to eight metres, 7.62m to be exact) away from the hole. Make sure the putt is relatively straight uphill or downhill and avoid curving “breaking” putts for this drill.
- Putt with the intent to roll the ball at the right speed. Instead of focusing too much on the roll of the ball, rely on your feel. Repeat
this drill for the next three balls. - Regardless of where the first four putts end up, pick them up and place them around the hole. Use your putter to measure the length and put the balls at north, east, south, west so you have three-foot putts – up/slow, down/fast, curve right, and curve left. Now hole each of these putts in the centre of the cup. If you miss, bring the ball back and make an adjustment in either your direction (line) or distance (speed).
- Repeat this drill one more time in the opposite direction so you get a better judge of distance control and hole four more short putts.
This is very simple but effective drill to do before playing golf. It will give you feel and confidence as you walk onto the first
green. Putt well and play well, my friends!
