Singing, swinging and soaring
Meet Mr Jimmy Yap – Keppel Club member, globetrotter, and music man. After retiring 16 years ago from a remarkable 45-year career in the chemical industry, where he last served as Managing Director (Asia Pacific) for Swedish conglomerate, Perstorp, Jimmy turned his sights to exploring the world. To date, he has visited 108 countries, and is aiming to reach 130. A passionate singer since retirement, Jimmy was inspired by Tony Kwek, the lead singer of the local band “The Mysterians”, to perform with live bands, earning him the nickname “The Singing & Travelling Ambassador of Singapore” from music blogger Andy Young. A true citizen of the world, Jimmy’s zest for life, travel and song continues to inspire.
Q: What draws you to Keppel Club? Is it the sport, the social activities, or the food and beverage?
A: Back when Keppel Club was at Bukit Chermin, I lived just two minutes away at Caribbean @ Keppel Bay. Now that the Club has moved to Sime Road, I am living five minutes away at Watten Estate — it feels like destiny! I love the wide range of food, the many cosy spots to unwind, and of course, the wonderful friendships — from fellow golfers on Sime course to singing buddies I met at Little Harry’s Pub.
Q: Do you enjoy coming to Keppel Club?
A: Absolutely. I’ve put down roots here. The golf course, with its mature trees and panoramic views of MacRitchie Reservoir, is simply beautiful.
Q: Do you consider the Club your second home?
A: Yes, Keppel Club is definitely my second home — it’s where I feel I belong.
Q: What do you appreciate most about the Club?
A: I still remember the uncertain days when our Bukit Chermin lease was ending — some of us were even considering golfing in Johor or the nearby islands! Fast forward to today, and we now have this amazing 18-hole course, formerly part of SICC. Walking into the Sime Road clubhouse fills me with pride — from the Heritage Corner, Pro Shop, and gym, to the Tee Top Restaurant, Berlayer Room, Little Harry’s Pub, and even the Beer Garden. Not to forget the impressive restrooms!
Q: Do you have a memorable moment from bowling, billiards, golf, or tennis at the Club?
A: One of my happiest memories was participating in Keppel Club’s Charity Golf 2024, and i have a video to share here. It was even more memorable with live music at the Beer Garden, where I performed alongside professional singer Mendoza and his band. Truly unforgettable!
