Golf tips from the Pro
Golf Tips from the Pro is a series that features tips from our professional golf coaches. This month’s contribution provided by British PGA Professional, Mr Richard Harries.
Richard Harries has been coaching in Singapore since 2004. He has played in many regional and minor tours as well as the Asian Tour & Sunshine Tour (SA) from 1992 to 2004.
In this article, Richard shares his thoughts on the intangible aspects of golf — the placebo effect, as well as some psychological and physiological essentials.
“Try hard to try less hard”
Without a doubt, golf is measured by score and influenced by talent, work ethic, technique, modern clubs, and shiny golf balls.
Yet the element that ties all these factors together is mindset — outlook, attitude, temperament, understanding, and belief. It’s great to have a predictable, repeatable technique and the short game hands of a surgeon. But when you play or practise, be psychologically strong — practise with proactive purpose. Play with positivity and clarity of thought. (See, pick, and hit small targets; keep distractions away and commitment high.)
Physiologically, oxygenate well — breathe! Smile often to release those vibrant chemicals. Accept that we can become fast and excited on the course — so walk, talk, and breathe slowly.
In adversity or success, stay cool, calm, and composed. Controlling your heart rate is crucial; external “placebo disturbances” often stem from poor planning and preparation. Be professional, prompt, and organised in your pre-round routines.
Remember, muscles don’t have memories — we have neuro-patterns! Create systems, visuals, and routines in your practice, preparation, and execution sequences.
Peak performance golf comes from being in a bubble of competence — freeing yourself from the suffocation of overthinking and finding that state of effortless play.
And as Queen Elsa from Frozen wisely sings: “Let it go… let it go!”
