Norazman Mahat, better known in the golfing community as “Norman”, embarked on his coaching journey in 2015. A seasoned professional, he has worked with various golf academies, led numerous corporate golf clinics, and holds a wide range of certifications and qualifications that reflect his commitment to continuous development. Norman believes that true success in golf lies not just in mastering skills, but in developing a lifelong love for the sport.
In this edition, Norman explains how improving hip mobility can unlock a more powerful, fluid and consistent golf swing.
Unlock your turn, stretch your power
The secret to a powerful, fluid golf swing lies in your ability to rotate. For many desk-bound golfers, tight hips are the hidden enemy, robbing you of distance and consistency. The key? Unlock your body’s natural mobility with targeted stretches.
Why hip mobility matters
Long hours of sitting shorten the hip flexors and reduce internal rotation, the essential movement for a full backswing and a powerful downswing. Restoring this mobility is a real game changer.
Improve coil: A fuller shoulder turn against stable hips creates stored power, like winding a spring.
Stable base: Mobile hips allow your lower body to lead the downswing, promoting crisp, solid ball striking.
Injury prevention: Releasing tension in the hips protects your lower back from the strain of a restricted swing.
The daily drill ‘90/90 hip stretch’ (See illustration below)
- Set-up
Sit on the floor. Position one leg in front of you, bent at 90 degrees, and the other to the side, also bent at 90 degrees. Keep your spine tall. - The movement
Gently lean forward over the front leg until you feel a deep stretch in the hip of your back leg. Hold for 30 to 45 seconds. - Switch sides
Repeat on the other side and focus on deep, relaxed breathing.
This simple stretch is your first step towards a more athletic address position and a freer swinging motion. Now imagine pairing this new mobility with a swing that transfers that power straight into the ball. Happy golfing!
