Club Night: A tradition of tennis, friendship and fun

Every Tuesday and Thursday night, the tennis courts at Keppel Club come alive with the vitality and enthusiasm of players who gather for the twice-weekly Club Night sessions. Designed for the Club’s tennis enthusiasts, these sessions provide an opportunity not just for spirited matches but also for fostering camaraderie among members. According to our colleague in charge of tennis, Mr Ashok Kumar, Thursday nights are more popular and typically see around 10 players, each bringing their passion for the game and their love for the Keppel Club tennis community.

To capture the essence of what makes Club Night special, we reached out to some of the regular attendees and asked them two questions: What do you look forward to when attending Club Night? And what do you hope to achieve by participating?

More than just a game, a tradition of tennis and togetherness
Mr Srinivasan S. Iyer said he looks forward to “bonding with his fellow tennis kakis while enjoying good, fast-paced matches”. For Mr Yukioka Kazumasa, it was the joy of “playing with various type of players and to sweat it all out”. Apparently, the mix of playing styles, fitness levels and skills made the games engaging and evenly contested.

Beyond the thrill of the game, Club Night is more than just a weekly tennis session. Club Night fosters social connections. Mr Edward Tham fondly recalled attending the sessions since the 1990s at the old Bukit Chermin courts. Club Night was, and still is, a time and place to “de-stress and share laughter”. To him, Club Night has become “a tradition night” in Keppel Club.

Another long-time player, Mr Patrick Lau, highlighted the strong social bonds among the players formed over the years. The warmth of the community, and the joy of reuniting with old friends made each Club Night a cherished experience.

Club Night is not just for seasoned players—it is an open invitation to all tennis enthusiasts at Keppel Club. “I hope to see more new faces joining the sessions,” said Mr Colin Chow.

Tennis Convenor Kamal Ehsan summed it all: “Whether it is the thrill of competition, the joy of friendship, or simply the love of the sport, Club Night offers a great platform for networking, making new friends, and reinforcing the close-knit spirit of the Club.”

So, if you have not yet experienced the fun, come down and be part of this wonderful tradition!
