Golf tips from the Pro
Golf Tips from the Pro is a series that features tips from our professional golf coaches. This month’s contribution provided by British PGA Professional, Mr Richard Harries, focuses on how to do a good chip — one that never fails.
Richard Harries is a British PGA professional who has been coaching in Singapore since 2004. He has played in many regional and minor tours as well as the Asian Tour & Sunshine Tour (SA) from 1992 to 2004.
In this article, Richard gives his tip on…
Mastering the magic of a foolproof chip shot
Everyone needs a chip shot that never lets them down! One that is not affected by location, lies, emotions, or even club selection.

Start by choosing your favourite chipping club. Position the ball slightly back in your stance to encourage a descending angle of attack. Set your body weight forward and lean the shaft towards the target to help produce a crisp downward strike.
Adopt an open stance by presetting your feet, knees, and hips slightly left (for right-handed players), while keeping your shoulders parallel to the target line. This helps keep the lower body still and eliminates unnecessary movement.
Once your weight and shaft lean are set, use a simple shoulder-rock motion to swing—minimising the wrist action and keeping the legs still. This controlled technique promotes consistent and clean contact.
Head to the chipping green and experiment with different swing lengths and tempos. Use a variety of clubs to learn how each one influences your flight-to-roll ratio.
With practice, you will unlock your own short-game magic, find your inner “Harry Porter” magic — and become the true Wizard of your Wedge!
